This essential is dedicated to the work of the philosopher Hans Jonas from the point of view of the development of his thinking. The early studies of late Gothic Gnosis form the starting point. Here Jonas encounters a topic that he critically discusses throughout his later work, namely that of the hostile dualism. In the 1940s studies of philosophical biology, an attempt was made to interpret man in his bodily mind to its highest symbolic expressions from the process of total evolution, and thus implicitly toward the misanthropy of gnosis refute. In his Ethics of Responsibility, which he systematically recites responsibility in the famous principle published in 1979, there is also the ethical side of overcoming gnosis, namely, that man must take responsibility for a world in which future generations can live decently , In his last metaphysical-theological assumptions, the problem of responsibility is addressed with reference to a God who is becoming in the creation itself.

The philosopher Hans Jonas (1903-1993) is one of the most prominent representatives of German-Jewish emigration and one of the most important intellectuals of the 20th century. He was still in the academic milieu of the Weimar period; He received his doctorate in 1928 under Martin Heidegger. Then came the seizure of power by the National Socialists, which suddenly interrupted the marked academic paths. The emigrant, whose mother was murdered in Auschwitz in 1942, served as an Israeli soldier in the Second World War as a British, then in the Israeli-Arab war of 1948. Jonas then continued his academic career in Canada and the United States – and in 1979 created the foundations for modern ethics of the future with his famous masterpiece The Principle of Responsibility – An Attempt at Ethics for Technological Civilization. Jürgen Nielsen-Sikora now presents the first comprehensive biography of Hans Jonas from the files.

310 pages, release year: 2017
Not many philosophers have received as much publicity as Hans Jonas. This was not exclusively due to his bestseller “The Principle of Responsibility”, which became a media event in 1979/80. It was Jonas’ merit to have fueled an ethical debate about the future of man who met the zeitgeist. But are the ideas of Hans Jonas still up-to-date today? How have individual topics evolved? The present volume discusses the ways of thinking of Hans Jonas and gathers some answers from proven Jonas experts.
